I prefer to paint Still Life these days largely because of the wider range of colour available in the subject matter and the abscence of rain. I feel this genre has, despite its antiquity, several avenues are yet unexplored. Painting in this way demands empathy with natural objects, which is less likely to result in self conscious work. Discoveries made in the process of painting. Things begin to happen.
Cezanne made a strong impression on me as a student. I share his suspicion of the literary in painting. The general harmony of a painting is all the 'statement' that it makes. As the maestro once remarked "Painting is not servile to copying objects, it is to seize a harmony between numerous relations".
