Tony Goble

Tony Goble

Tony Goble's works often act as postcards from beyond the everyday, sent back at you from the stops made along the way on a visionary voyage.
Or maybe as polaroids of the imagination, pasted into a dog-eared album detailing implausible journeys made with eccentric companions.
And journeys in this pre-industrial folklore world
are often made by boat or atop mythological beasts that wear the artist's face. Fantastic animals and angels move through his recognisable Welsh landscapes, stopping to rest beside a Cardiff landmark or two before continuing on their way. Puzzled-looking prophets and Old Testament kngs also wear the artist's bearded face, drawing us into the story being told by the bright hues and giving us a sense of religious iconography being brought down to earth. "They are all narrative paintings but the narrative hasn't been written yet. I'm hoping someone will come along and write it", explains the artist, inviting us to make our own story to link his colourful creations in a seamless story.
